DRESS FOR SUCCESS CONGRESSIONAL CHALLENGE
Wednesday, May 20, 2009
Dress for Success in Washington, DC issued a noble challenge today to members of the House
of Representatives, the Senate, and their staffers: donate suits to DC’s women transitioning
from welfare to work. Okay, to be fair, Dress for Success invited friends and family to join the
challenge, as well. So, on this particularly beautiful spring day, members of Congress and the
community answered the call. Fed Ex, sponsor of the event, provided the containers, trucks,
and man-power to get the suits directly to the women who will wear them.

To track the politicians’ progress, the House of Representatives drop off point and breakfast
was Capitol Hill’s Bullfeathers. The Senate location was the Reserve Officers’ Association. I
attended the Senate gathering.

Joi Gordon, CEO of Dress for Success worldwide, and Senator Mary Landrieu (D-LA),
Honorary Chair, were on hand for donations and dining (breakfast was provided for all
participants). Jennifer McNulty, Executive Director of Dress for Success Washington, DC and
members of their Advisory Board cheered on as dozens of cartons of donated suits were lifted
onto waiting FedEx trucks.

Local and national corporate sponsors were on hand during this morning’s challenge
including
Gina F. Adams, Corporate Vice President of Government Affairs at FedEx, and
Niki Leondakis, Chief Operations Officer of Kimpton Hotels & Restaurants.

I’m glad that so many people turned out to donate suits for a good cause. However, I must
admit, I wonder who was most filled with the spirit of giving: the House or the Senate?
